Friends, Families and Travellers (FFT) is pleased to share a new series of eight animated short films designed to provide clear, accessible information on vaccinations for people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
The eight films were co-developed and co-produced with people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, and in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Roma Support Group (RSG). A full methodology report has also been released, detailing the co-production process and key lessons that can inform future co-production activities.
The films–which cover maternity vaccines, childhood vaccinations, whooping cough and measles–were developed to support Gypsy, Roma and Traveller families to make informed choices on healthcare.
Each film, designed by FFT Associate Gemma Challenger, give clear and engaging visuals to explain:
- What vaccinations to expect during maternity and childhood;
- How vaccinations can protect against serious and long-term illness;
- What happens during vaccination;
- Where to find trusted information and support.
The short films are available to watch here as well as on FFT’s social channels, and translations are available in Polish Romanes, Romanian Romanes and Slovak Romanes for Roma communities.
In a separate testimonials, two Irish Traveller women share experiences of life on the road, access to healthcare, and how a respectful conversation can support vaccine uptake.
On the importance of informed healthcare decisions, Chief Executive of Friends, Families and Travellers, Sarah Mann said:
“Vaccinations are one of the best ways to protect ourselves from serious illness.
We know that the right information is not always easily available in a way that feels clear and trustworthy for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller families.
With RSG and the UKHSA’s support, these films give people the tools to make the decisions that are right for them and their families.”
Health visitors, midwives, schools, community groups and anyone working within Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities is encouraged to use these films to ensure equal access to vital information.
