Policing Act Workshop: Understanding the new powers and the impact on nomadism

Please note: This session is for Gypsies and Travellers and voluntary sector organisations working with these communities ONLY, therefore we are operating a ‘waiting list’ to confirm registrations.

On Tuesday 14th June 2022 at 11am, Friends, Families and Travellers will host its first online workshop with Community Law Partnership (CLP) on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022.

The workshop aims to raise awareness and increase understanding of the new police powers contained within the Policing Act, which will come into force on the 28 June.

You can register to attend the free workshop here.

The workshop will be chaired by All Party Parliamentary Group for Gypsies, Travellers and Roma Co-chair Mary Foy MP, and will be delivered over Zoom by Chris Johnson of CLP. The workshop will cover:

  • Overview of the new legislation;
  • What the changes are from currently existing eviction powers;
  • The criteria that must be met for police to exercise these powers;
  • What to do when faced with the new legislation – is there any recourse to justice?

The Policing Act 2022 represents the biggest assault on Gypsy and Traveller communities in decades – introducing a new criminal offence relating to trespass and strengthening already existing police powers against roadside camps.

The workshop is due to be held at 11:00am-12:30pm and forms part of a wider series of training on the Policing Act 2022, in partnership with CLP. Keep an eye on our pages for upcoming events.

Speaking about the workshop, Abbie Kirkby, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at Friends, Families and Travellers said:

“We’re pleased to offer this free workshop on the Policing Act, delivered by the brilliant Chris Johnson of Community Law Partnership, as part of a programme of activities and resources on the Act.

As the Act is rolled out on the 28 June, it is more important than ever before that Gypsies, Travellers and people living nomadically are aware of their rights, and how to sustain a travelling way of life.”
