FFT event: Inclusion of Gypsy, Traveller and Roma histories in school curriculum

On January 28th 2021, Friends, Families and Travellers (FFT) would like to invite individuals and organisations with an interest in equality, diversity and inclusion in education to an online event to discuss the importance of including Gypsy, Traveller and Roma histories and cultures in the national curriculum.

On 1st July 2020, we welcomed the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers Recommendation, for the first time calling on its 47 member states to include the history of Roma and/or Travellers in school curricula and teaching materials.

Today we are sharing our open invitation to professionals working in education, equality organisations, politicians and people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities to come together to share good practice and ideas to drive change.

During the online event, which will be hosted by Baroness Janet Whittaker, you will hear discussions on how the inclusion of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller histories and cultures, and education about the Holocaust, can be an effective tool to combat hatred, discrimination and prejudice in society.

The online event is from 10:00am – 12:30pm on 28th January. The event falls on the day following Holocaust Memorial Day (27th January).

You can register your place here.

Speaking about the event Emma Nuttall, Advice and Policy Manager at Friends, Families and Travellers said:

“We’re excited to give a platform to guest speakers who can highlight the need for classrooms which recognise the diverse and rich histories of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, from personal and professional perspectives.”

Looking to the event, Suzanna King, Crystal’s Vardo Project Manager at Friends, Families and Travellers shared:

“We have worked with young Gypsies, Roma and Travellers who have highlighted the impacts of not being represented in school learning – we hope that the politicians and policy makers joining us in January will be equally moved by the impacts of invisibility.”
