Measles hits Travellers
Nursing Times, 31 May 2007
At least 20 cases of measles have been confirmed among the Travelling community, the Health Protection Agency has warned. There have been at least 13 cases in London, six in the East of England and one in the South East. This represents nearly half of the measles cases confirmed this year in England and Wales.
At present there is an outbreak particularly within the Traveller community, mainly due to Travellers having difficulty accessing health services. This combined with a poor uptake of the MMR vaccine in the settled community means that the ‘herd’ immunity is lost, causing more people to become exposed to the virus and spreading it.
